13 Affordable high weight capacity treadmills for heavy people

by Jack on March 19, 2016

My father is a larger person (over 350 lbs) who I caught searching online for home treadmills. Not really a problem, I was glad to see he might be starting to take losing a little weight more serious. But since I do spend my time researching and reviewing many different models, you would think he would ask me for a little in help in finding the best fit for him?

This is a guy who joked for years about joining the gym to work-out with me. It’s almost as if he was making a threat when saying this to me. Like he was looking for signs of embarrassment on my face.

He never did join the gym to workout with me. However, he finally did sucked up his pride and asked me for advice on treadmills. Like many people his biggest concerns was cost. All he wanted was a simple model to walk on. Well, I was sorry to break the news to him but due to his weight this required him to buy a High Weight Capacity Treadmill For Heavy People and this might require him to pay a little extra.

If you are a big person over 300 pounds you do need to pay attention to the weigh capacity ratings on treadmills. If you don’t you could end up wasting your money or even worse hurting yourself in an accident. There are home treadmills with capacities of 300, 400 and 500 pounds. I know some people want to spend the least amount of money as possible. We have spent time researching the highest quality and also the best priced (affordable) models

There are many treadmills on the market which provide a 300 lbs weight capacity. If you are looking for value at an affordable price we would recommend checking out the LifeSpan TR 1200i model. This model has been around for more than a few years so its hard to argue with the all positive reviews it has has received.

What people say at Amazon

About the models specifications

Other than weight capacity, if this is your first time buying a home treadmill there are certain specifications you will want to pay special attention to when making your decision. These 5 areas are:

  • Motor
  • Frame
  • Tread Belt
  • Cushion System
  • Warranty

We wrote a buyer’s guide discussing these areas in depth. Here we will just try to keep it “short and sweet” and say the LifeSPan TR 1200i treadmill does receiving a passing grade in these areas. It has a Continuous Duty horsepower motor (CHP) which is the most durable and efficient style of motor. The frame is “steel welded”, this is also what you want. The tread belt is the right dimensions (20 x 56). The cushion system might not be the absolute best but considering the price it preforms well. The warranty we rate as excellent, it provides lifetime guarantees on both the motor and frame.

300 lbs capacity Schwinn Treadmill

We tend to be a bit bias in our treadmill recommendations. More often, we tend to recommend treadmills manufactured by companies concentrating treadmills as their core business. You probably have heard of the company “Schwinn“, you may have one of their bikes in your garage or an exercise cycle in your basement.

However, the following two models from Schwinn were worth mentioning. When it come to core features: Motor, frame, tread belt and cushion system both models have what we look for when rating.

While they both have the right style of motor (CHP) and a sturdy frame, the warranty in these for these two core features is a bit lacking. We prefer to see lifetime guarantees on both the motor and frame. While not terrible the warranties of both these Schwinn models instead provide 10-year guarantees on their motor and frame.

Schwinn 870 Treadmill

The 870 model is a bit more advance than its little brother pictured above (the 830) in fact besides the warranty we spoke of the Schwinn 870 Treadmill outperforms the LifeSpan TR 1200i in both horsepower and also has a longer running platform (tread belt).

ProForm 505 CST Treadmill

Durable Treadmills for heavy peopleThe ProForm 505 CST is the cheapest (most affordable) option on the list for heavy people. The model has been around for more than a few years and has received some mixed reviews from customers. What overall sense do we get about the quality when looking at it on paper to judge the most important areas?

  • Motor
  • Frame
  • Tread Belt
  • Cushion System
  • Warranty

From a price vs. quality viewpoint it looks like a good deal. The motor is a 2.5 horsepower CHP. The frame is manufactured from steel. The tread belt has good dimensions 20 x 55 (inches). The ProShox cushion system, while we don’t rate it as being the best it is acceptable considering the price range this model is found in. The warranty isn’t too bad either, a lifetime guarantee on the frame and a 25-year guarantee on the motor.

As we already mentioned, the ProForm 505 CST has been on the market for a few years and has received some mixed reviews from customers. We provided this model here as a low cost option make sure to take the time to read over the specification and it would also be wise to take the time to read both the positive and negative customer reviews before making a decision.

Note: the 300 pound weight capacity models listed above are not the only models on the market with these specifications. The Horizon Fitness T101-04 Treadmill is another model. There many more options as well, the goal of our list here was to find the best models while also keeping the price reasonable.

Sole 350 – 400 lbs weigh limit

Sole F65 vs. F80 vs F85 Treadmills

over 300 lbs weight capacity treadmill

Sole F80 folding treadmill

At the beginning of this post I spoke of my father who weighted around 350 pounds and that he was looking for a heavy duty treadmill for his house. So which model did he end up choosing? While visiting my sister, who lives out of state, he had the opportunity to test her Sole F85 (400 pound weight limit) which she has in her basement.

Although he really liked the F85 it was a bit more than he wanted to pay. But then he looked at two other models made by the same company, the F65 and the F80 this models were a bit less expensive.

My father ended up choosing the Sole F80 which has a weight capacity of 375 pounds.

All three of these Sole models are very nice and have received a ton of positive reviews from customers. They (F65 vs. F80 vs. F85) look almost identical and would take a keen eye to notice the differences just by looking. What are the differences?

Each are built with basically identical frames and they all have lifetime warranties on the motor and frame. As you go from the F65 to F80 to F85, weight capacity and price increase, along with motor size (horsepower) and dimensions of the tread belt. There are also extras features included with the most expensive F85 model which are not included in with the least expensive F65 option.

Specifications and reviews at Amazon: F65, F80 and F85.

Treadmills with 400 lbs capacities

Walking treadmills for heavy people

Exerpeutic TF1000

The first in this heavy duty category is the Exerpeutic TF1000 Walk to Fitness Electric Treadmill. If you are on a budget and walking is the only type of exercise you have in mind then this model comes at a very affordable price. We can tell you right now there are both positives and negatives about this model.

The biggest positives are in the areas of safety, comfort and the model is also extremely quiet. As for safety it provides a wide track to walk on and the side bars are extra long. Another aspect of safety worth mentioning is that the speed controls are also located on these side arms. The Exerpeutic TF1000 also provides an extremely effective cushion system. Some treadmills run loud, the level of quietness this model exhibits is an advantage for people who want to watch TV or listen to music as they exercise. And of course another positive would be the 400 pound weight capacity.

What we see as negatives worth mentioning. We already mentioned this above, this model is only for walking. The motor is rated 1.5 horsepower with a top speed of 4 miles per hour. Another aspect we see as being somewhat weak is in the warranty. The warranty provides only a 5-year guarantee on both motor and frame.

As far as the weaknesses or negatives go, if walking is the only type of exercise you have plans to do then the low top speed shouldn’t be a problem. As far as the 5-year warranty on the motor and frame, we do like to see more extended warranties, however, walking is a lower-intensity exercise compared to running so the treadmill will not be exposed to the type of pounding a runner can put on it and the motor is high torque which will make it highly durable. Taking these factors into consideration and also the low price we think the Exerpeutic TF1000 does provide value.

Another 400 lbs capacity choice

Heavy duty walking treadmill as a work desk

Exerpeutic 2000

From the same company as the choice directly above is the Exerpeutic 2000 Workfit this model is a bit more expensive with a few extra features. The Exerpeutic 2000 vs. Exerpeutic TF1000 there are a lot of similarities. They both are specifically built for walkers with the same 1.5 horsepower motor, they both have a high weight capacity at 400 lbs and they both are built for high comfort and safety. Finally, they also have the same warranty which provides a 5-year guarantee on the motor and frame.

So what are the differences? For one, the Exerpeutic 2000 has the ability to incline, while the less expensive Exerpeutic TF1000 doesn’t provide this feature.

Secondly, the Exerpeutic 2000 also doubles as a work desk. As you can see by comparing the pictures of these models the 2000 model has a more extensive platform on top which can be used as an area to keep books, phones, computers, iPad, TV at arms reach. In fact, this model is popular model in healthy workplaces where want to spend at least part of their day standing and walking as opposed to sitting.

Best choice for big runners

On this page our main goal was to provide the highest quality but affordable home treadmill options best suited for heavy people. Understand, more expensive options with high weight capacities do exist. However, it was not our goal to make a list of the most expensive models on the market.

Also, while we were putting together this list of recommendations we were mainly thinking of heavier people like my father who only planned on exercising by walking. But what if you are a bigger person who want an affordable home treadmill you can run on? Which model would we recommend?

With their high weight capacities and powerful motors we would recommend checking out Sole treadmills. We already listed three of their most popular models on this page.

  • F65
  • F80
  • F85

All three of these Sole treadmills are high quality but we suggest you look into the specifications of each model and take the time to read both the positive and negatives reviews left by current owners in order to find the best fit for you.

Sole F85 – Affordable Running Treadmill for Big People

Highest Weight Capacity Treadmill – 500 lbs?

At the moment we are unclear if such a monster exists. We have been told a company Star Trac manufactures models with these heavy duty capabilities. However, we are yet to come across one where this is stated in the specifications.

So what is the highest weight capacity treadmill we have come across? the answer would be the Life Fitness 95Ti treadmill with a 450 pound weight capacity. This is a very high end model. Looking at this model in 2016 the lowest price we saw was right around $3000.

The Life Fitness 95Ti definitely can handle a load and has a list of extras to go along with it. This is a high performance treadmill with a powerful motor that can reach a speed of 14 miles per hour and also provides 15 degrees of incline.

We are sure some people in the world have this in their home but the 95Ti is probably more commonly found in gyms. It might be the world’s best treadmill but the cost of ownership is probably well out of the average person’s budget.
