Better for running: Nordictrack c990 vs Proform 2000 treadmill

by Jack on January 18, 2017

Nordictrack c990 vs Proform 2000 which model is the better buy? Basically, when using a treadmill there are three different exercise intensities: Walking, jogging and running.

We probably didn’t have to tell you this.

Either of these two treadmills can be used for walking or jogging. The goal of this review is to describe which model is better suited for people who want to exercise by running.

There are a lot of different options and features to look at before buying a treadmill.

Does it fold? Does it have incline? Does it come with exercise programs? What is included in the warranty?

However, most of these extra features have nothing to do with whether or not the machine will make a good choice for running. Here by comparing the Nordictrack C990 and the Proform 2000 treadmills we will tell you what runners need to first look at before making a decision.

For running – Most important Specifications:

Of course you can walk or jog on either of these treadmills. But what if a person who wants run? Is the NordicTrack or Proform model suited for this higher intensity workout?

There are two important areas of the machines you need to examine:

  • Motor (Style and Horsepower)
  • Tread Belt/Exercise Platform (Dimensions)

The Motor

About the style of motor, no matter which treadmill you end up buying you will want to make sure it comes with the Continuous Duty Rated Horsepower (CHP) style of motor, as these are the most durable and efficient.

About the horsepower (hp). It should be obvious a more powerful motor is needed for running compared to walking or jogging. This power comes in the form of horsepower.

If you do intend to run, we recommend buying a model providing at least 2.5 hp.

The Tread Belt/Exercise Platform

It should be obvious that when a person goes from walking to jogging to running their stride becomes longer. This mean if you are buying a treadmill for the running you will want to make sure the dimensions of the tread belt long enough to accommodate a longer stride.

For walking and jogging we recommend a tread belt of at least 48-inches in length. For running the minimum length should be 54-inches.

Specifications for runners: Nordictrack c990 vs Proform 2000

To sum up what we said above about the minimum specifications a treadmill needs to have:

  • A CHP motor with at least 2.5 hp
  • A tread belt that is at least 54-inches in length

Now, do these two models meet, exceed or fail to meet these specifications?

Nordictrack C990 Treadmill

  • Motor: 3.0 horsepower CHP motor
  • Tread Belt: 60-inches in length

Proform 2000 treadmill

  • Motor: 3.5 horsepower CHP motor
  • Tread Belt: 60-inches in length

Better for running: NordicTrack c900 or Proform 2000

Both these models exceed the minimum requirements in areas most important (motor and tread belt) to running. As for which is better overall, we would have to give the edge to the Proform 2000 treadmill since it comes with a larger more powerful motor.
