Is this a good choice for running – LifeSpan TR1200i folding treadmill

by Jack on June 11, 2016

Someone emailed us with a question about whether or not the LifeSpan TR1200i folding treadmill was a good choice for running. Also asking, whether or not you could even run on it.

OK, we will not going to call this LifeSpan model “cheap” the last time we checked in 2016 it was selling for $800- 1000 depending where you shopped. The majority of people would not consider $1000 or even $800 as a small purchase. Either do we.

However, there are higher performing models costing $1000’s more which are monster machines when it comes to running on them.

Two main details for this type of exercise

As a rule of thumb, there are two important characteristics or qualities to pay attention to when judging whether or not a treadmill is a good choice for runners.

Characteristic #1

You must look at the style and size (horsepower) of the motor the treadmill is equipped with. You will not get too far if the motor isn’t right.

A few different styles of motors exist. No matter which model you end up buying you must make sure it has the Continuous Duty Rated Horsepower (CHP) style of motor. The CHP is the most efficient and durable style. Make sure you learn this information in either in the specifications or the product description the style of motor on board.

After you know a model has a CHP motor then you also want to look at the amount of horsepower (hp) it provides. As a rule of thumb, 2.5 hp is the lowest or smallest motor we would recommend buying for running.

Does the LifeSpan TR1200i folding treadmill meet these motor requirements in both style and size? Yes. This model has a Continuous Duty Rated Horsepower, the right style and its size or power is 2.5 horsepower.

Characteristic #2

The second main characteristic you need to look at when buying a home treadmill for running is the tread belt (running platform) length. Obviously, a runner’s stride needs more room. The shortest length we would recommend is 55-inches.

The TR1200i LifeSpan model has a tread belt 56-inches in length.

To answer the question – Is it good for running?

As we mentioned at the top of the page, there are many more expensive models which are heavy duty and specifically designed for runners. However, these more advanced models can cst $1000’s of dollars more.

For the price, we do consider theLifeSpan TR1200i folding treadmill a good choice for runners. See our rating here.
