Motor size, horsepower and ProForm 6.0 RT Treadmill good for running?

by Jack on July 4, 2016

Question: We received an email from a guy asking whether or not the ProForm 6.0 RT Treadmill was a good choice for running at home. Also, could you explain the minimum amount of horsepower (hp) a treadmill motor should have in order to make a decent choice for running.

Answer: As a rule of thumb, we consider a 2.5 hp motor being the lower limit on treadmills we would recommend for running. The specific model mentioned in this question (Proform 6.0 RT) has a 2.0 hp motor so we would not recommend buying this for running.

Is the Motor of the ProForm 6.0 RT Treadmill enough for running?

Home running?

Extra information: If you look at the product description of this model at Amazon you will read the motor is capable of a 10 MPH top speed. Yes, we would consider a rate of 10 MPH to be running (60 minutes/10 MPH = 6 minute mile).

Contradiction: If the model is capable of producing a top speed of 10 MPH and we consider someone moving at 10 MPH as running does this mean we are contradicting ourselves when we say the ProFrom 6.0 RT is not a running treadmill? NO!

We are not saying you could not set this model up in your house, jump on it and turn the speed up to the maximum of 10 MPH. The reason we do not recommend this treadmill with only a 2.0 hp motor is because we have an issue on how durable it would be over the long-term.

In order for smaller, less powerful motors to produce the same top speed as a larger more powerful horsepower motor this requires the smaller motor to run at higher revolutions per minute (RPM). This means more stress is put on a less powerful smaller hp motor in order for it to run at the same speed as a larger hp motor.

The precise reason we would not recommend the ProForm 6.0 RT Treadmill to someone who was looking to buy a model for running is we believe it (confidently) the motor will not stand the test of time.

Extra, Extra Help: Based on the price of the model the person asking this question was interested in we felt it was safe to assume they we on a budget. So in our email reply we included a few different low priced options (see here) which we would recommend for runners.
