Schwinn 830 Treadmill Review – Other Recommendations?

by Jack on December 3, 2015

Before beginning the review of the Schwinn 830 Treadmill, we want to say, while we don’t believe this model is the absolute best in its price range, we would also find it hard to say this is a bad buy.

We will recommend at least one other model that we feel is better at in this price range. Understand, this is only our opinion, there could very well be a certain feature(s) on this Schwinn model which make it a better fit for you and your home. Again, we don’t think this is a bad buy, we believe it provides quality for the money spent.

Schwinn 830 Treadmill review

Schwinn 830 Treadmill review

This review will cover what we believe are 5 most important criteria to examine when judging the quality of home treadmill:

  • Motor
  • Tread belt
  • Frame
  • Cushion System
  • Warranty

If you truly think about it… The 5 criteria listed above are the “Meat and Potatoes”, the core functional areas which will determine the quality of any home treadmill.

Of course other needs exist for some people, such as: Is this a folding treadmill? Does it provide incline? As well as questions about different accessories and built in exercise programs.

But by far and away the five areas listed above are the most important to first consider.

Do we approve of the Schwinn 830 Treadmill’s motor? As far as the type of motor, yes we do, this model has a continuous horsepower (CHP) motor, the correct type of motor.

We can’t stress this enough, if you are a person who is currently wanting to buy a home treadmill, there are a few different styles of motors you may come across as you are looking at different models out there

Besides CHP motors, there are also: Treadmill rated and duty rated motors. We highly recommend you stay away from buying any model with either of these two motors. Both are less durable and efficient compared to the CHP.

This Schwinn model has the correct style of motor but is this all you need to know? NO.

You also need to be aware this motor is rated at 2.75 horsepower.

Enough power for runners?

This is what we have to say about the horsepower provided. If you plan to exercise by walking and jogging this is plenty enough power. But is this enough power for people wanting to buy a treadmill for running inside your home?

A 2.75 horsepower CHP motor is powerful enough to spin the track at 12 MPH (5 minute mile pace) this is the smallest we recommend for dedicated running. So yes, the Schwinn 830 can be used for running.

Note: A couple things to mention:

#1 – The speed 12 MPH isn’t the big, most important factor in determining whether or not this model is suitable for running, this is because even smaller horsepower motors can reach 10-12 MPH speeds. The main factor is whether or not it is durable enough to hold up in the long term without breaking down. In our opinion, motors less than 2.75 horsepower will have a problem holding up in the long term.

#2 – As we said the 2.75 CHP motor in this Schwinn 830 Treadmill is the smallest we would recommend buying for running. But you should also consider your body weight. If you are a big 240 lbs hulking stud that can run like the wind, you are probably going to wear this motor down a lot faster than a person of average body weight.

If after reading our opinions and advice but you still are unsure if this model is suitable for running then we can only recommend, searching for more information on 2.75 CHP motors or call your local exercise equipment store to confirm our opinion.

Tread belt

There are two pieces of information you need to arm yourself concerning any model’s tread belt. One is the dimensions and the other relates to the durability of the belt.

Dimensions – The dimensions of the Schwinn 830’s belt is 55-inches in length and 20-inches in width. These dimensions are going to be good enough for any type of exercise whether walking, jogging or running.

Durability – The belt on this treadmill is 1-ply (1.5 mm thickness) of course 2-ply and 3-ply belts are thicker and more durable but overall 1-ply or 1.5 mm thickness still provides sufficient durability.

The frame is an important part of the treadmill. For beginners, what you want is a rust-resistant metal frame, this model’s frame is constructed from metal which is the most important and to be honest we could not find information on whether or not it has a rust-resistant coating. We suspect it does but we can’t confirm this. But this is of lesser importance.

Note: One of the best ways to determine the quality of the frame is to look at the warranty. How many years is it guaranteed? The best quality frames will have a lifetime guaranteed.

We have seen some 15-year guarantees but the 10-year guarantee is the much more common step down from life time. The Schwinn 830 treadmill comes with a 10-year guarantee on it’s frame.

Not as good as having it guaranteed for a lifetime but considering this is a model priced under $1000, 10 years out is not a bad deal.

So when buying, make sure you take a look at the warranty. This will tell you a lot about the quality of the model. Obviously, it’s not in the best interest for a company to sell a piece of junk but then also give it long term guarantee, either a lifetime or even 10-years.

They would be setting themselves up to losing a lot of money in the cost of replacement parts, labor and shipping.

Cushion System

Cushion is definitely important to runners but also elderly walkers and people with overall joint problems whether they choose to exercise by walking, jogging or running.

While this model doesn’t have close to the best cushion system on the market, we do give it a good rating based on the price. It’s softer than running on the street or sidewalk.

As we already mentioned, when talking about the quality of the frame above the warranty provided is a good place to start when judging the quality of any model.

Here’s the warranty on this model:

  • 10-years on the motor
  • 10-years on the frame
  • 2-years on mechanical problems
  • 2-years on electronics
  • 1-year labor

It’s definitely not the best warranty in the business by any stretch of the imagination, however, it compares well to models in it’s price range.

Should you buy it

As we said at the beginning of this review, we do believe for the price the Schwinn 830 Treadmill provides quality. But is it our top pick int he price range? No, in our opinion there are models that we would choose before buying this.

Our top choice in this price range would be the LifeSpan 1200i model. It’s a bit more expensive but definite;y  worth taking a look at if you want to bring the highest quality into your home for under $1000.
