The better choice: LifeSpan TR1200i vs. NordicTrack C 990 treadmill

by Jack on November 18, 2016

Maybe you already have a good idea on how to judge the quality of a treadmill… If you don’t, here we give you a guide to the most important things to consider before buying. We will do this by comparing the LifeSpan TR1200i and the NordicTrack C 990 treadmills.

Honestly, we do not believe most people know how to judge the quality of treadmills. Not because we think people are stupid, only because most people do not spend their time learning about treadmills. Except maybe right before they are about to buy one. So here we will share our guide on the most important things to judge by comparing these two models.

First look at the most important parts

Many people will get sucked into certain “extras and accessories” provided by a model. This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when buying a treadmill. While we are not saying the “extras and accessories” provided by different models should not be considered but if you want the best value for your money you should first review the most important parts of the treadmill.

What are the most important parts?

Let’s see if you agree? If you think of how these machines work we think you will agree the following 5 areas are vitally important:

  • Motor
  • Frame
  • Tread belt
  • Cushion System
  • Warranty

Now we will compare the LifeSpan TR1200i vs. the NordicTrack C 990 treadmill in these 5 core areas.

#1 Motor – Durability and what runners should consider

Who would not agree that having a high-quality motor is very important? Are you aware there are a few different styles of motors used on treadmills?

For the best in durability and efficiency you will want to buy a model with the Continuous Duty Rating (CHP) style of motor.

Now what about treadmills for runners?

CHP motors come in a range of different levels of horsepower. Obviously, if you plan to use your treadmill for running you will need to buy a model that provides more horsepower compared to what is needed for walking.

As a rule of thumb, we recommend buying a model with at at least a 2.5 CHP motor. The 2.5 represents the amount of horsepower. From our experience anything lower than 2.5 will not hold up for runners in the long-term.

Which model has the better motor?

  • The LifeSpan TR1200i treadmill comes with a 2.5 CHP motor installed.
  • The NordicTrack C 990 treadmill has a larger 3.0 CHP motor.

While the LifeSpan model does have the right style (CHP) and does meet the minimum (2.5) horsepower requirements for running, we have to give the edge to the larger 3.0 horsepower CHP motor of the NordicTrack C 990 treadmill.

#2 Frame – Why this is important?

Not the most exciting part of a treadmill but there are a few important things to be aware of about the quality of the frame.

A good frame will provide both a sturdy platform to exercise on and also provide enough use user weight capacity for even larger people.
