Treadmill with Desk Workstation

Buying a Treadmill with Desk Workstation

Walking into my bosses office I noticed an addition to his desktop computer, no it wasn’t sitting on top of a treadmill, rather it was a product called the VARIDESK Pro 36 workstation. This a platform you put on top of your normal office desk, which allows you to raise it when you want to stand and work. It can also be lowered normal sitting level.

We bring up the VARIDESK product for two reasons: First it provides a similar function as a treadmill workstation, secondly, it’s the why we decided to write about this subject.

Furthermore, if you can’t afford to buy a treadmill, the VARIDESK Workstation is a less expensive alternative and also might be a better fit for some office spaces.

Prolonged sitting – Why you should stand-up

As humans, our bodies were not designed to be sedentary, sitting for 8+ hours a day. Research has shown prolonged sitting being directly linked to serious health consequences (heart disease, diabetes, obesity and even certain cancers) and ultimately the shortening and decrease in quality of life.

Some people choose a sedentary life, sitting on the couch watching TV, eating potato chips. This is their own fault. Other people want to be more active but things in their life get in the way, namely, their work schedule which requires sitting behind a desk and computer for 8+ hours a day, five days a week. This is the major obstacle.

Top Choices for buying a Treadmill with a Desk

There are more than a few companies making these, we will show you which models we believe hold the most value.

TrekDesk Treadmill Desk review

TrekDesk: Stand up and work

But first, we want to provide an option for those people who already own a treadmill and are only looking for a desk that was specifically designed to attach to what they already own.

If this describes what you need then we would recommend looking into a product called the TrekDesk Treadmill Desk this is very highly rated by customers who have bought it.

Note: This is only a desk, the treadmill seen in the image is not included with the purchase.

There are many things we like about this product but there are a couple things you should also be aware of before buying. Read our review to see what we have to say.

Stand-up and work with LifeSpan

There are a few different companies producing treadmills designed with desk workstations. In our opinion, by far the company producing the best is LifeSpan. They produce a variety of different options at different price ranges.

Don’t let the prices listed in the table below scare you! All prices have been reduced by 25 to over 50%!!! For example the most popular model, the LifeSpan TR1200-DT has been reduced by $500 (or 25%) and now has a price of $1499.

Likewise, the TR800-DT3 price has been reduced from $1,199.00 to $659.

Which model is best for you

There are two main differences between these four LifeSpan treadmills shown above that you will want to keep in mind when deciding which is the best fit for you and your office or home.

The first difference can easily be seen looking at the images of each model. Two of these models (TR1200-DT and TR800-DT) come with the desk built in.

The other two models (TR1200-DT3 and TR800-DT3) are only a naked walking platform.

One positive about these models they are less expensive, both can be purchased for under $1000. But if you don’t already have one, you will need to buy an appropriate desk.

Same platform as above without the desk

Another positive, the quality of walking platform and internals are identical

  • TR1200-DT .vs TR1200-DT3
  •  TR800-DT .vs TR800-DT3

Besides the LifeSpan DT series

having the built in desk/workstation, the other aspects and qualities of the models are virtually identical.

The built-in desk is nice to have but if you already have a desk that will fit, there’s no reason to

TR800-DT Desk Treadmill

Smaller platform, less expensive

spend the extra money. And if you don’t already, there are many low cost desks you can buy.

The Second difference

If you have a sharp eye you may be able to notice this difference. However, if you are not able to notice the difference with you eye, all you need to do is scroll up to the table and find the row describing the “Walking area” dimensions.

  • TR1200-DT and TR1200-DT3 – 20 inches in width and 56 inches in length.
  • TR800-DT3 desk treadmill

    Least Expensive Option

TR800-DT and TR800-DT3 – 18 inches in width and 52 inches in length.

The larger walking platforms (TR1200-DT and TR1200-DT3)would be better suited for larger people, people,  with longer legs who take longer strides when walking.

Smaller people with shorter strides might want to consider the smaller platforms (TR800-DT and TR800-DT3) overall these are less expensive. If you don’t need the larger platform why spend the extra money?

How fast or slow do the go

All of the Lifespan treadmills listed above have a bottom speed of 0.4 miles per hour (mph) and a top speed of 4 mph. These are not meant or built for running, they also do not provide an incline.

Not sure, maybe some people picture themselves being able to run on a treadmill behind a desk while working on their computer. Maybe you can. But from my personal experience when I hop on a treadmill to run, my ability to read is drastically reduced.

We read an article on the business insider website describing working behind a treadmill. In our opinion, the article was a little over the top. The writer described having a very difficult time.

But what we found ridiculous, the writer walked at the highest speed possible and was trying to beat a co-workers record by walking and working the entire workday (8+ hours). After hours and hours of walking at the highest speed, the dummy writes about how difficult it was and she doesn’t recommend using a treadmill with a desk.

How to use a treadmill with a desk

The philosophy and benefits of these types of machines isn’t about walking at the highest speed possible for the entire workday, as the article at the business insider website described.

The benefits and philosophy behind owning and using one of these machines is about avoiding prolonged sitting and also receiving some cardiovascular benefits while you work.

Maybe you do a half an hour in the morning and a half an hour after lunch. Maybe after some time and you feel more comfortable working as you walk, maybe you increase your time to an hour. Whatever works for you and you feel comfortable with.

Of course, your work and concentration efficiency will decrease a bit as you work while walking, especially when you are just beginning. You will get more and more comfortable. Still, it’s probably best if you work at your treadmill at times where your workload is lowest.
